"CONTROL" YOUR MENTAL ARENA
Mental health, strength, and resilience are not just reserved for the ones that are born with it.
Just like anything that we don’t possess in our lives, it takes effort and the willingness to pursue it.
What stops us or keeps us stuck is the fact that we don’t want to feel the pain and discomfort of change, or that we don’t realize we have a choice to change.
Thoughts of, “it is what it is” and “there’s nothing I can do about it.”
With the “fixed” or the “victim” mindset, we put so many of our dreams, visions and goals on hold or give up on them completely. Leaving us feeling like we failed, or that we are not good enough to have what we really want in life.
The fixed mindset leads to us being stuck in J.A.I.L., behind internal “bars” that keep us from moving forward.
Judgement: is about pointing out and over-stressing over things you don’t like about yourself, your life, a certain circumstance or situation.
Assumptions: an expectation that, because something has happened in the past, it will happen again…aka the “vicious cycle”.
Interpretations: an opinion or meaning that you create about an event, situation, person or experience and believe it to be true.
Limiting belief: a generalization, stereotype, or idea that you learned and accepted about yourself, about the world, or other people that limits you in some way.
The beauty of being stuck in J.A.I.L. is that we put ourselves there and we have the ability to get ourselves out.
We are the lock and key.
Unfortunately, most don’t acknowledge that we can decide to build our own mental arena (health, strength, resilience) through daily routines and habits.
There was a time in my life where I judged my actions (as a dad) as bad or stupid, assuming because of my circumstances (no fatherly figure growing up) that things would never change, interpreting life as sad and unmanageable. Leading me to the limiting belief that I was a product of my environment.
Until I became aware that I had the lock and key to my own stuckness.
Here are a few questions that you can ask yourself to begin the process of getting out:
Judgement: What evidence do I have to support/oppose this judgment of myself?
Assumptions: Just because XYZ happened in the past, why do I think it will happen that way again?
Interpretations: What might be some other possible interpretations about XYZ?
Limiting belief: How would your life be different if you believed something else?
These are questions that will dramatically cause some much needed introspection and change the way you approach your life.
Consistent reflection and acknowledgment of these internal blocks, will arm you with tools to get back up each time you get knocked down, mentally.
When you keep suppressing and ignoring the real challenges, the scrap in the mental arena, apathy and frustration kick in and you will continue to experience catabolic energy.
What situation in your life right now do you want to address with these J.A.I.L. questions?
Bust out that pen and paper, or screen and keyboard, answer the J.A.I.L. questions above and get back to what you really want on your journey!
